My EMT journey

As this journey begins, I will begin volunteering at the local fire department and preparing myself for acceptance as a full member of the department. Once I’m accepted, I will begin an EMT training program. In the meantime, I’ll be shadowing on calls and preparing myself with background study and reading on anatomy, body systems, and what it means to work in the emergency medical field.

The EMS/ED Plan

Complete EMT-b training
Take NYS EMT test and get licensed.
Begin work as a volunteer EMT

Focus on gaining experience as a practicing EMT. Gain volunteering experience, perhaps work as a paid EMT over the summer
2028
(SY 27-28)
EMT-Advanced or Paramedic trainingTraining will happen throughout the year (1200 – 1800 hours, including shadowing or clinical rotations)
2029
(Final SY 28-29)
Gain experience as a practicing paramedicAgain, volunteer or paid
2030 – 2032Continue to gain paramedic experience.
Consider nursing school and apply if appropriate
The move from EMS to the ED is part of my plan, not to leave EMS but as a potential career change.
2032 and beyondComplete nursing program and become an RN
Gain experience and find employment in the ED
Continue education (BS, NP, etc) and build experience in the ED
Continue EMS work, volunteer or otherwise, while moving toward full-time work in an ED setting.
